Directions
This hike can
be reached from the Clingmans Dome parking lot. This road is closed
during the winter due to the extreme amount of ice formation. Approximately
in the center of the park, take Rt. 441 (Newfound Gap Road) from
Cherokee or Gatlinburg. The Clingmans Dome road is well marked and
is near Newfound Gap. From there it is a 7 mile climb to the Forney
Ridge parking lot. As you drive on this road, notice the change
in the forest from deciduous to boreal as you climb to the higher
elevation.
Once you are
parked, the trailhead is to your left, just before you climb the
trail to the observation tower. Take the Forney Ridge Trail 1.8
miles to Andrews Bald. 8/10's of a mile

Smokemont
campground, the largest campground in the Smokies, is open year-round.
Each of the 140 sites has a picnic table and fire grill.
The sites have picnic tables and grills. The campground has
drinking water, flush toilets and a dumping station for RVs. This
is a good campground for hikers because it is a good base camp for
the many hikes along Newfound Gap Road. Smokemont Campground also
has a worthwhile 3.8 mile loop named aptly named the Smokemont Loop.
The campground is located on US 441 (Newfound Road), six miles north
of Cherokee. Call (423) 436-1266 for reservations.
Back-country

Campsite
68 on Forney Creek Trail is the closest backcountry campsite.
Approximately 2 miles from the bald, this is a good campsite if
you want to get views of dawn and dusk at Andrews Bald.

Follow

on the bald will be 5 to 15 degrees lower than Gatlinburg. Rain
is frequent and cold so don't leave Clingmans Dome without rain-gear.
