Camping (On the trail)

There are two official campgrounds for the park. Reservations are required for both. Walk ins are not allowed.

Cliffview  (Near Galax)

 (540) 236-8889   Directions: Take State Route 58 to Galax. Go north on SR 887 to Cliffview Road (SR 721). The parking area is on the left, across from the Cliffview Mansion and Cliffview Trading Post.

Millrace (Foster Falls)

 (540) 699-6778 Near the Shot Tower State Park Directions: From I-77, take Exit 24. Go east on State Route 69 to SR 52. Go north to SR 608. Go east and follow signs. 

Pets

The park is patrolled by Park Rangers in four wheel drive vehicles. The rule most often enforced is the leash law. All dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. I have witnessed Park Rangers issuing a ticket for this violation neat Ivanhoe. 

Hiking

The trail is shared by hikers, horses and bicycles. The grade is gentle and the path is smooth. There is a lot to see along this trail including many old industrial sites that pre-date the war between the states. The scenery is much like what you would expect to see in Ireland, rolling hills punctuated by livestock in pastoral scenes. This is a must see for "Rails to Trails" enthusiasts.
